you have to be kidding me...

Thu Apr 23, 2009, 9:48 PM
**** UPDATE *****

The site has been adjusted. The author changed the intro stating that not all work depicted is stock, and to check with the artist first, and dA was removed from the list.

****************************************************************

I was shown this site by ~photographydomine and it made me very very upset.

I have been the victim, as I am sure many of you have, of someone using my art without my knowledge or consent. People believe that if it's there, they can take it, and that mentality pisses me off!

Here is this website titled "16 Ultimate Collection of Free Stock Photography"
[link]

and yes.... deviantart is second on the list.

Now I don't know about you... but my work isn't stock... and I don't want people coming on here thinking it is. I love dA and I don't want to leave it.. but with shit like this and people being able to just right mouse click all over the place, I don't know if I can stay.

grrrrr.

that is fucked up that people think that just cause someone posts something on the internet that its free for the taking. i should know. i'v been a victim of it
:iconjeffreywinner:
This is bullshit. I left a comment at the bottom of the page and I'm not the only one who did about DA.

I agree with the above. Embed your copyright. Urge DA to redo the submit function to give us a No save option on our work-a Save Block. Don't leave because your pissed. Work within the site to get the thieves blocked and the changes made.
:iconaislinneire:
from what I hear they have already been urged to disable right mouse click, but don't because they don't feel it's worth it.. if people are going to steal it, they'll find a way. I agree with copyrighting... although most of my images aren't mine to copyright. Copyrights are also very easy to remove unless they cover the picture... which takes away from the art.

I'm not saying I wont try.. it just seems like a pointless fight.

yeah, I have too. Even more so when they are on sites for displaying ART! Where do we have to go that we can display our work, aside from a gallery? It's not fair that our rights as artists have to be encroached upon just because some assholes thinks they can take what they see.

DA does have a lot of stock photography, and a lot of good stock photography work. The URL should point to that area specifically.

I would put a reminder on all your photos that these images are not stock. Also only upload 400x600 size pictures. That way they really cannot do anything with them print wise anyway.

It is a shame that people would steel from a model/photographer but making them aware of the difference between your work and stock work does make them think twice.

I couldn't agree with you more Aislinn. In fact, I just sent those bozos at Softalize a serious letter condemning them for portraying dA as a site filled with "Free Stock Art".

I urge all dA members, and dA themselves to do the same. I also agree with you about allowing an artist to have the download and "right click" function disabled. dA should support that feature as an effort to help their constituency protect their intellectual property.

Good journal Aislinn....please keep in touch!

Ugh. It is a never-ending battle.

I wouldn't make a big deal about trying to get dA to disable right-click saving of images. It is trivial to get around so it does nothing but create a false sense of security.

Uploading reasonable-sized but low density images limits the secondary use that can be made of images. Heavy-handed watermarks ruin the art for the legitimate viewer, but careful signing of the image makes it recognizably non-stock.

Hang in there,
Steve
